It lacked only the hotel room on the theme of Evangelion, which is now done… For about $350, you can now enjoy a night in the world of NERV. The room has a bed in the shape of an “Entry Plug” and a life-size Shinji.

Rikku's Headband

Find and cut a length of blue material. It should be long enough to be tied around your head, and wide enough to go from about the top of your forehead to the middle of your scalp. Alternatively, stretchy material can be used, so no tying will be necessary.
Fold over about 1/2 and inch of the the material on the long sides and sew with blue thread for a more finished appearance.
DO NOT fold over and sew a seam! Try your best to find blue Spandex, as this will make the headband as painless as possible.
Measure the head band to be twice the width it should be, and add 1/2 inch for seam allowances. Then, fold the piece of fabric in half(with the side you want to be seen on the inside) , and then sew a seam along the open sides to close them up.
Press the seams by ironing them flat.
Turn the tube of fabric inside out, so that the "top" side of the fabric is now facing out.
Fold the band in half again so that the two ends are together, and sew them shut.
Press the Seams and turn the band inwards.
( If it is possible, use a curved needle to stitch the band into the mesh of your wig so that it won't move around.
Make sure to hide the stitches by only sewing on the inside layer. There should be no visible seams.

Rikku's Gloves

Buy a pair of gloves in leather color bordeaux (is better) or dark brown.
Make the gloves fingerless to the first knuckle.
Sew the finger cuts, so the gloves won't break.
Buy leather or faux-leather material if you can't afford the gloves. Use a pattern to cut and shape them.

Rikku's Small Pouches

Cut the shapes similar on the cloth and sew it.
You must make a little bag, so you take the right sizes on you body.
Now cut in the cloth also a little loop, where then you will insert the belt.
Remember to sew it not in the center of the bag, but more in height size.
Now put the eyelets on the opening and then over this sew the orange laces then in second moment you will insert in the eyelets' hole, so the bag will rest close.
For the belt you make it always in same cloth of the bag, remember to sew it in double layer, so it will be more resistant.
Now insert in it the press stud (you can insert it like closing or like decoration, check it in official Rikku's image).
Then when the belt will be ready, put in it also the buckle. This type of buckle is difficult to find, so you can customize it.
Take a similar buckle without steel bar in the middle and make it with a steel lamination or in other metals, that you can find in hardware store and attach it with strong glue (loctite) or fuse it with oxyhydrogen flame.
The last thing, to do stay the bags more swollen, you can insert inside them a piece of foam rubber.

Rikku's Shoes

For the shoes use a pair of boots in leather, and cut the upper part vertically to triangle.
Then glue another piece of leather under the triangle, so the triangles stay open.
Then take some acrylic color (blue and white) and paint the boots, to make sure that the colors don't mix use paper tape to divide the parts.
First you give the blue and then the white.
Now you put the eyelets on the back of the boots, and then you put in the
Eyelet the yellow shoelaces.
Now you take some silk white ribbon and with glue you make the decoration on the border of the boots.

Rikku's Visible Underwear

The right procedure for this is to take some panties similar to a tanga and to copy the model.
When you have copied the model in a paper, you bring it on the cloth; you use the same cloth that you used for the bra.
It is better to use the yellow lycra.
When you have cut and sew it, take two strips of orange lycra or other flexible cloth, is better to use the same orange lycra of the bra or to find a similar color cloth.
Sew this two strips at the border of the tanga, if you make them in flexible cloth, they will stay on, in your hips without problems.
Remember that the orange strips are really important in this pieces of the costume, because you will see only them over the skirt.
This is the correct method, but if you have haste you also can sew the strips over the skirt...but the result is not so wonderful

Rikku's Sleeves

See the model of the Sleeve in a official Rikku's image, cut it on the paper and bring it on the cloth (remember to do this with open model and not already close(^^)
Now sew the hem of the sleeve, but leave open it, you will close it with the ribbon.
Cut always in the cloth eight strips, these will became the strips for the ribbons.
Now sew them in the border of the sleeve, in specular mode as you see in image n. 1.
For more security is better that you close the top side of the sleeve and insert in it a elastic strip, so the sleeve will rest on your arm without problem.
The Sleeves are ready, you must only tie the strip and to do the ribbons.
(If you have some friend you wear the sleeves and ask at your friend to tie the ribbons, while if you are alone, tie the ribbons before to wear the sleeves

Rikku's Bra-like Top

Take two bra's cup with triangle shape.
Cover them with yellow lycra.
Now take a strip of orange lycra or silk and sew it around the bra's cup covered with yellow lycra.
Put two eyelets on every bra's cup over the attached orange strip; here you will put the orange laces, when you will link the two cups.
Now sew a little yellow lycra strip at the two cups ( remember to do this in lycra, because it must be flexible, so also without fastening you can wear the bra, without break it or open it with orange laces.
Then sew a short black leather belt with a buckles at the high side of the cup.
when you finished this, put in the buckles a long black leather belt, that will go from a cup to other cup.
So you finished all the Rikku's Bra.
Note: You can do it also without bra cups but I advice for the persons with big breast is better to use the cups.

Rikku's Mini skirt

Make a skirt, using a similar fabric as Rikku's. Rikku's is but very short, but you can make it a few inches longer, if you'd like.
Add any stitching and details.
Add the pouches, and wear over the visible underwear.

Rikku's Scarf

For the scarf, you take wool tissue (yellow color) and with this you make a scarf ( double layer), now you take batik color (red) and dye for the center of the scarf ( some immersion are needed). When you have the right color you stop this procedure.
Now you take the yellow wool and make the plumes (for each are needed about 20).

Rikku's Hair

Take a normal blonde wig for carnival, Halloween or other event in costume of your country.
Don't worry if your wig isn't a perfect, without longer hair or right fringe, in this tutorial I'll teach you how adjust it.
Tie the hair's wig in ponytail with a black rubber band, but leave two hair locks in front and behind.
Now do four little pigtails at these locks and tie them with transparent rubber band and put in them the beads.
Here you must use two types of beads, two big (blue and pink) and two really small. (For the right color check on the official Rikku's image).
Take in the pony tail some locks, and do also at these little pigtails and close them always with transparent rubber band. (check the number of pigtails unofficial Rikkus' image)
Now insert a medium beads in the middle of the pigtails, then insert the bottom side of the pigtails in the black rubber band.
while you insert the pigtails you must cross they between them.
Now if you see that your ponytail isn't long enough, buy a hair blonde extension (you can do it also with another wig, cut the hair and sew it on the cloth strip) and insert this application inside at the black rubber band, so you will have a longer ponytail.
If the fringe is too short, take or make an extension and sew it at the wig with a normal needle (you must sew it by hand, because with sewing machine it's impossible to do and the result won't be good).
Now put the wig on you head, and insert the hair band, and put on it the two free pigtails on it.

Rikku's Weapons

Draw the body of the weapons on a 1.5 cm thick multilayered ply-wood.
Drill the holes and cut them with an electric hand-saw, make the edges with plane and rasps,
Finish with sand-paper and plaster or putty.
Draw the golden rings on a 0.5 cm thick ply-wood, drill the holes and cut them.
Put the big flat headed spikes on the weapons.
Paint the weapons with metallic red and the rings with red-golden or golden paint.
Glue the pieces together and paint the handles brown.

Things You'll Need

Paper Mask Tutorial

Base
First, I suggest you get a hard (heavy weight) plastic face mask -preferably a full faced craft mask. And I say hard because I've learned that some are made of a harder plastic while others are made of a flimsy cheap plastic which doesn't seem very durable or strong. If you can bend it ridiculously easy, than keep looking!
-If you can build a 3-D face out of clay or have access to a plaster life-cast, then those will work just as well if not better for your mask-base.

#1. Designs/Features
Now, you can either build up facial features or designs using clay (and either non-drying modelling clay or air-drying clay will work) on top of the plastic mask or you can just leave it as is.

Release Agent materials
You can cover the mask in seran wrap or just a layer of vaseline to protect the clay(...especially if it's the non-drying modelling clay.), as well as to act as a release agent to make removal of the paper mask from the base easier. I've heard of non-stick cooking spray being used, but I've never used it before.

I've learned that:

seran wrap can create a bumpy surface because the plastic wrap doesn't adhere smoothly to the plastic of the mask, so that can prove to be VERY frusterating...but when the over-cast paper mask is dry you can just peel the seran wrap off of the backside very easily...so, it's got it's pro's and cons.
vaseline makes for a much smoother work surface, but the paper overcast doesn't dry as well 'till it's been removed from the plastic mask base. You need to have the paper mask dry all the way through before you start applying fabric and paint and sealants -if possible. But, after you've gotten a thick enough buildup of paper and feel confident in removing it from the plastic form, you can let it dry and then keep adding more layers.

Paper Requirements
I've read of people using brown paper bags for their masks, but I've only used tissue paper (same as what you'd find in gift bags) as well as the paper that is used in stores to wrap your breakables in -ask if you can have some of it, this stuff is pretty good for building up thickness quickly. But make very small scraps of this thicker paper so you don't have as many risks of wrinkles and uneven surfaces.

#20-#12 Paper Application
Tear your tissue paper up into little pieces and thin strips. I do it as I go along, but you can have yours ready before you start -up to you.

I've used a slightly watered down Elmer's Glue mixture; I've added some powdered wall paper paste to it which gives it an eggnogg kind of texture; and I've used just straight glossy Modge Podge. All of which work perfectly fine.
I use a paint brush..medium size. Just dip your paint brush into your glue mixture and coat the plastic mask in a layer of it and then add either one or a few pieces of tissue paper at a time and then coat those with the paintbrush. You don't need to glob it on, just add an even thin layer over the tissue paper..but make sure the paper is thoroughly wet with each layer( the paper should darken when it's thoroughly wet).

Make sure you cover the mask (or just the area you are working on) with a complete layer -in other words, none of the mask/layer below is showing. Be especially sure that you pay alot of attention to the nose area, you want to make sure it's a strong structure.

Now...I've started using black tissue paper between layers and I suggest you do the same as it makes it easier to tell how thick your layers are.

To explain in depth
Put down a layer of dark or black tissue paper and paint it over with your glue mixture, then start layering on top of that with a lighter colored tissue paper -keep adding layers 'till you can no longer see the black underneath it. When you reach that point, add another layer of black and do it again.

I suggest using small pieces of tissue paper for tight areas like the nose, bridge, around the eyes, small spaces like those. I tend to use larger pieces on the forehead and cheeks -but be careful 'cause you're more likely to get creases and wrinkles with bigger pieces and your finished product won't look as smooth.
A tip: When applying many layers in one sitting -once the paper starts getting really soggy from the glue and wants to tear every time you drag your brush across it, it's time to set it aside and let it dry for a while. Maybe just 30mins. to an hour before adding some more layers. Again, don't add too much of the glue mixture...spread it out smoothly. You'll be able to tell when it get's too soggy and if you're paper is wet enough or not after a little while.

Unless you're using a disposable paint brush, I suggest you use soap and warm water to clean your paint brush shortly after you're done using it. -Especially with the Modge Podge, that stuff dries quickly! And make sure your glue mixture is in an air-tight container...tupperware works well for this!

#14. Removal
I can't tell you how many layers to build up 'cause I never have counted my own and I think it's differant with each mask. I use a little test...

To tell when the mask is ready to be removed from the mask base, stick your finger between the paper and the mask and gently wriggle it loose...if you're afraid that the mask may tear or cave in upon removal, then it's not ready -keep adding more layers, but if it feels strong enough and you're not worried, it's ready -but still be careful and gentle as you lift it from the mask base. But as you lift it, gently wriggle the mask from side to side...take it slow!
Again, the vaseline underneath or the plastic/seran wrap will act as a release agent and should make lifting the paper mask from the plastic/clay alot easier.

#16/#17. Trimming
I tend to trim the outer edges with some small craft scissors and for the eyes I use an exacto knife.

You may be able to sand the surface with a fine grade sand paper after adding a couple layers of gesso, but I've not had much luck with it. There are sealants out there that you can apply which will prepare your work surface for sanding -just read the bottle for it.

#23 -I use a white, spray-on gesso to add a smoother and harder surface to my masks.

Finishing touches
I use a spray-on adhesive on the backside to apply my thick brocade fabric and thin braided trim on the edges for comfort and looks. Don't apply too much adhesive 'cause it'll soak through your fabric and possibly ruin it. After you've applied your adhesive let it dry a little 'till it's tacky and then apply your fabric.

Again, I use small scissors to trim the fabric on the outer edges and an exacto knife around the eyes.
I use craft glue (the kind that comes in the gold bottle with the white top...I forget the name of it...) on the edges to attach the tie-on ribbons...so pull up the side a little, put some glue in there and then put your ties/ribbons in. Let that stuff dry and I do suggest being a bit heavy on the glue, actually. This also applies for the top if you want to add feathers or something else. LOTS of glue!!!
In effect, you are sandwiching your ribbons and/ or feathers between the backside of the paper mask and the fabric.

Extras
#13 If you want upraised designs on your mask, some people use hot glue, ropey trim, thick thread, or even pipe cleaners. You can use those or air-drying clay. DAZ and Paperclay are pretty good to use -though they take several hours to dry and they turn whiter as they dry, so that's a good way to let you know when it's done.

#21 -Be sure to also add a couple layers of paper over the upraised designs so it blends better and less chance of it coming off of the mask later on from wear and tear or coat it in a couple layers of your glue mixture.

I suggest making sure that your mask base is wide and deep enough for your own face so that your mask will be comfortable for you to wear. And adding onto the nose a little with clay before applying the paper might be a good idea. Keep in mind that the thickness of the fabric and the trim you add to the backside of the mask will take away from the room available for your face...so after the backing has been applied, your mask may not fit as it had earlier.
I suggest covering the paper and paint in a polyurethane sealant. I believe I get mine through DecoArt acrylic paint which I've found at all three of my local craft/art stores. I get a nice little bottle for about $1.00 -it's a good thing to apply so that the paint and glue are sealed in and moisture doesn't bother them so much. Or get a spray on sealant, matte or gloss -up to you.

I also suggest getting a spray or paint on gloss coat. I use a spray on...it acts as a sealant on top of the polyurethane and it adds a very nice shiny/glossy coating which is very attractive.
If adding a handle, be sure to first find out whether the wearer is right or left handed so you know which side to attach the handle to. Then lift up the fabric on the backside at the appropriate edge, apply lots of glue and then stick the handle's tip in. I use tiny clothespins to hold the fabric flap closed over the handle. Or you can use hot glue.
I tend to use Puffy fabric paint on the edges to give the mask a 'finished' look or you can add some corded trim, that way the edges look good, too.

Otherwise, acrylic paints, fabric, feathers, sequins, decorative papers, dryer sheets, glitter, gems, etc. can be used for decoration. Don't allow your imagination to be limited and try your best to be unique in your designs. It's ok to be inspired by another's work, but outright copying of someone else's art is NOT cool, and I don't care how the saying goes, plagarism is not a compliment to anyone.

Asuka is very proud of being an Eva pilot, and near-constantly wears her A10 nerve clips in her hair, because she wants everyone around her to know that she is a pilot. Asuka's iconic catch-phrase (always directed at Shinji) is "anta baka?!" (あんたバカァ?!), "anta" being a contraction of "anata" meaning "you" and "baka" literally meaning fool or idiot. The official English dub renders this as "What are you, stupid?!"

At the start of the series, Rei is socially withdrawn, seemingly emotionless, and rarely interacts with anyone, except for Gendo, to whom she initially displays loyalty but with whom she has a generally distant relationship (she says in episode 15 that she "doesn't know what kind of person he is"). She lives by herself in a drab, dingy, sparsely-furnished apartment in Tokyo-3, a clutter of books being her only apparent luxury items (assuming they are not, in fact, schoolbooks). Toward the end of the series, Shinji comments that her apartment is very similar to the place where Ritsuko says Rei was born. Rei's neutral personality and emotionless nature arouse the scorn of Asuka Langley Soryu, who at one point refers to her as a "doll" or "puppet." Rei is, in many ways, the exact opposite of Asuka. While Asuka is extroverted, Rei is introverted. Also, Asuka is extremely boastful and overly proud of her accomplishments, while Rei constantly states her life has little value. Their appearances are also, in ways, inverses of each other (Rei has short blue hair and red eyes, while Asuka has long reddish-blond hair and blue eyes).

"An emotional change causes certain muscles in the face to tense, producing an "expression". Rei is expressionless but is it that she doesn't feel emotion, or that she is merely unable to express it?" Yoshiyuki Sadamoto on Rei (emphasis in original).

As the series progresses, she begins to develop relationships with others and to show moments of genuine emotion, to even become sad and cry.

Rei implies in episode 12 that she is a vegetarian, as she states that she "dislikes eating meat". The reason for this is not explained, though both Anno and Nadia (the title character of Anno's earlier anime) are vegetarians as well.

It is implied in episode 19 that Rei does not dream. When Shinji is unconscious in a hospital Asuka says he must be dreaming, and Rei is confused about what Asuka is referring to.

It’s so obvious that every fellow have their favorite anime & manga characters which they aspire to cosplay. However, does the one suit your style? Choosing right and fitted character is one of the significant parts in cosplay. If you’ve chosen the right character , it’s effortless to elaborate your acting potential and present your indulge in this character. If not, to display the perfect performance seems not so easy though there are other ways to fix some flaw. I think, before you seriously take steps on the stage, it’s indispensable to possess this unpleasant preparation that perhaps few laymen would place an adverse critic on your defective play.

So let’s talk about how to choose the suitable character to cosplay , In part one, I will talk about the boys cosplay.:)

For Boys

The first is to pay attention to your figure. If you are almost the same figure: referred to your height, weight, body proportion to the role you tend to act, it’s easy to present acceptable show with average costume. And regardless of your fullness or slimness, tallness or shortness, there are always countless characters to choose, which is superior to girls’ cosplay. The second part is to be cautious to some specific details such as the charm, the face cheek, or the behavioral styles of the character. A babyface to play a rough guy is strange and sort of missing the spirit. Grounded this two parts be accomplished well, the performance is to some extent a perfect show.

And below, you will see some good and bad cosplay from the cosplay boys , so how do you think of their cosplay?

For Girls

Unlike boys, the most important thing is about the actress’ body figure. As girls’ costumes have more pattern and stylish design than boys’, and even several body exposures, thus it’s better to find the advantage and disadvantage of the player, so as to choose the fit garment. For instance, if your legs look not so perfect, you can select long dress or trousers; the figure is round in normal clothes, you may pick up something that won’t reveal your curves. These concepts are the same clothes matching principles as in everyday life. Except this, nearly every other disconformity could be fixed up by other artificial methods, such as cosmetic, fake hair, small accessories.

Moreover, in capturing the spirit and charm of the role, girls could use cosmetic to demonstrate different effect, which brings numerous advantages to the performance. For example, rich make-up makes the actress sophisticated and gaudy, while pale make-up tends to display a sense of purity and innocence.

Specifically, about the crossplay. Normal situation is girls crossplay as boys, because female’s cheek curve is tender and reserved, which brings unexpected effect in transvestite. So if you’ve picked up the right character, you can take the chance to have a try. On the contrary, boys - character as girls sometimes is totally for fun, and some is seriously to display the grace and elegance of female. It is not a denial for your hard work, but a various degrees of acceptation. For the audience, I think it is better to cheer up for the crossplay for their courage.

The 6^th World Cosplay Summit is held in Nagoya on August 2 and 3 this year. Cosplayers from 13 countries are participating in events, such as cosplay parade and championship. Thousands of Japanese anime/manga lovers are expected to come for the event, join them in Nagoya.

Costume play has been a trend among Japanese youth, and various events are held in Japan. The World Cosplay Summit organized by Aichi Television Broadcasting Co. has begun in 2003, and the 6^th summit takes place on August 2 and 3 in 2008. Cosplayers from 13 countries, including Brazil, China, Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Singapore, Thailand, and USA participate in the event.

Japan is proud to have manga as one part of its culture. With its immeasurable popularity all over Europe, America and Asia, it is now usual for bookstores to have a manga corner in many countries around the world. At present, many young people overseas start learning about Japan through manga. These young people who know Japan from manga say… JAPAN is COOL!

In response to this popularity, many events with Japanese manga as a common concept, have gained notoriety with thousands of people involved and tens to hundreds of thousands of guests. In many of these events the performance and presentation of cosplayers who identify with Japanese animation characters is among the most anticipated moments. The World Cosplay Summit began in the fall of 2003, with the concept that cosplayers play a leading role in introducing Japanese manga and animation through the visual renderings of Japan and Japanese manga characters to people around the world. At the same time, it is also partly for people in Japan, so as not to take for granted the treasured things that exist around us.

In the summer of 2004, the second World Cosplay Summit was held, with eight cosplayers from Italy, Germany, France and the United States participating, garnering much media attention.

Beginning in 2005, ‘the stage performance’ was incorporated into the format of the contest and forty cosplayers from seven countries competed in a contest held at the Expo Dome at the World Exposition in Aichi Prefecture. The three thousand seats at the Expo Dome were completely filled, and more than thirty domestic and international media outlets were present.

The World Cosplay Summit 2006 was the fourth to be held, with cosplayers from Singapore, Thailand and Brazil joining to make a record total of nine countries competing. Along with the Osu Kannon parade, the Oasis 21 venue in central Nagoya was also used for the presentation of the 2nd annual World Cosplay Championships. A press conference was held in Akihabara, Tokyo, and there were even more media attention than the previous year.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport promoted the World Cosplay Summit 2007 as one event in the ‘Visit Japan Campaign.’ Cosplayers from 12 countries around the world gathered, with Mexico, Denmark and Korea being the three new participating countries. 200 cosplayers from around Japan participated in the Osu cosplay parade.The level of the performances was higher than usual this year at the championship.Roughly 10,000 spectators came to watch. And now on to 2008, and the World Cosplay Summit is progressing further towards new objectives.

San Diego Comic-Con continues its dominance as America's most buzzed about comics and pop culture convention. Koni Lui (呂慧儀) and Tracy Ip (葉翠翠) were guests at a promotional event for Xbox 360 game Ninja Gaiden II on Friday, 30 May 2008 in Hong Kong. The ladies were dressed in cosplay outfits of characters from the game and they drew quite a crowd with their sexy outfits.

Koni has been earning quite a reputation recently after appearing in a number of promotional events as a seductress.

She smiled modestly that Tracy's outfit was more revealing than hers and when asked if she would consider a nude shoot, she replied that she has never thought about it, but if a sexy image is required in her line of work, then she will do her best to comply.

Talking of her gaming experiences, Koni said that she likes to play computer games with her brother because it helps them both to de-stress.

Asked if she plays against her boyfriend, she refused to answer and explained that the man in pictures published earlier in magazines was not her boyfriend.

Tracy said that Koni is quite a showstopper and complimented her for her great body. Tracy seemed a little spotty and tired at the event and she explained that she has been busy filming for two series recently and this has led to an outbreak.

Fanime 2008: Manga Cosplay Convention

FanimeCon 2008 promised (and delivered) a weekend chock-full of anime, Asian films, manga and video game fun for Bay Area and Silicon Valley otaku. I wasn't able to catch all the events that was planned for this weekend, but I did manage to get a bunch of shots of some of the cool cosplay and generally orderly vibe of this fan-run event.

Anime fans from throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, Silicon Valley and beyond came out to check out the cosplay, the special guests and all-day / all-night showings of anime and Asian films at FanimeCon 2008. There are cool cosplay, artists alley, publishers' panel discussions, exhibitors and special guest appearances, including manga artist Maika Netsu, Dark Horse Manga editor Carl Horn and a huge group from fan-favorite anime studio, GAINAX.

CosPlay Wig Tutorial

So you want to try styling your own wig? Good for you! I don't consider myself an expert, but love helping and have written the following to share what I know. This is not a complex tutorial, but it shares the basics about styling wigs and provides some helpful information that I haven't seen elsewhere.

Purchasing a Wig
This is one of the trickiest parts, in my opinion. I purchase off of Cosworx, Amphigory, and when I'm feeling risky, eBay. Look for wigs that are made with Japanese synthetics, or Kanekalon for the highest quality wig. Quality pays off, trust me!

Wig care
Have a wig but don't need to do much to it? There are some easy things you can do that won't change the shape, but will make it look better!

Layer-cut: By using a razor(the kind you shave with) and "brushing" it against the bottom fibers of your wig, you can thin out the edges and give them that anime/video game look.
Motion's sheen oil spray: This stuff is the best. It's the final coating to a wig. Oil spray keeps your wig from tangling and gives it a nice sheen. And, it smells like bananas! Oil spray is not a detangler. To use, spray from a 1-foot distance on your finished/brushed wig. Don't spray too much that the liquid forms beads on the fiber. The important part is to let your wig dry for 6-8 hours. Once it's dry, it will be silky soft!

Wig-straightening/part-moving
If your wig is curly or the part is not in the right place, I can help you! First, place pins at the top of your wig to a styrofoam head. Brush the wig fiber to how you would like it to stay naturally - I recommend using a chopstick or other straight round instrument for moving a part. Use a stabbing motion at the base of the wig where you want the part, and bring the fiber to the other side. If you are making big fluffy bangs, make a horizontal part (a couple inches) at the top of the head and bring the fiber towards the front. When you're done, place it in your bathtub or somewhere where water can drain. Get the biggest pot you have, and heat water until it's nearly boiling. Remember to use gloves if the handles are hot! When it's ready, slowly pour the hot water over the top of your wig, making sure that all the fiber gets wet. Next, you allow the wig to drip-dry. You can press the fiber against a towel in a few hours if you get anxious, or put it on a towel in front of a dehumidifier (only if you have one). When your wig is dry or nearly dry, brush it out. If it's still wavy, repeat the process several times until it straightens.

(Elmer's Glue? This does work, but I don't recommend it because it is damaging to a wig and cannot be washed out)
(Tile Caulk? This will reinforce tips at the tops so that they never come apart, but you won't be able to wash out your wig.)

I can't stress enough that you will need multiple references as you're working; they help you get the spikes right where you need them.

Natural Fluffy Spikes:
The key to styling spikes is to work lightly, and do one spike at a time. This means that you cut each spike individually, hold it into position, apply a little bit of spiking gel along the length of the spike (or none at all for a totally natural, fluffy spike), and use a hair dryer on LOW setting for each spike. Every few spikes, use a little hair spray from a distance and try to spray them only. Try not to let the spray bead up; it means you're spraying too close or too much. If you want more product in it, let it dry before you put more in.

Flat Spikes:
These must be styled one at a time as well. I do recommend cutting them individually, but you don't have to. They do need to be styled individually, though. These spikes require a lot of spiking glue and a hair dryer on LOW setting, with hair spray at the very end. When using hair spray, spray from 9-12 inches away from the wig, and lightly so that the spray does not bead up on the wig.

Ella Koon (官恩娜) had her first taste of Cosplay today at an event to promote the Xbox game Lost Odyssey, where she was joined by Japanese model 木村乃. The two ladies dressed up as characters from the role playing game, showing off their cleavage in some tight corset dresses.

Asked if she felt that the outfit was too sexy, Ella said that she felt the dress was quite conservative and her 34D figure is actually only the same as many other girls. She revealed that she quite enjoyed her Cosplay debut, but said that she did not have the figure to carry off the dress that the other model was wearing.

Ella later said that the costume was rather uncomfortable and she had to adjust herself through the performance. She added that she had taken precautions to avoid revealing herself accidentally on the stage.

Starting Cosplay Photography

This article is for those who has been in photography before, and want to take next step as cosplay photographer.

As starting point, go to a con (cosplay conference). Cons are the best place to start cosplay photography as they have a ton of cosplayers. most cosplayers go to cons to get their pictures taken, so this means you have a ton of willing models. Depending on the scenery of the con, you might be able to get some amazing shots.

Be polite, ask before you shoot, don't gank another photographers subject matter until they are done and you'll be on your way.

Most of the shots of cosplayers at cons are snapshots taken in hallways. Although most people will give you 3-5 minutes, it's polite to only take 4-5 shots. They're dashing from panel to dealers room and eating pocky and hitting people with yaoi paddles so getting a more involved shoot from a complete stranger is a lot harder to get - if that's the sort of thing you're interested in doing with cosplay photography.

If you have friends who cosplay and would be willing to do some shoots for you, that's always an option. and if you cosplay too you could do some self-portraits.

Just put in mind that there's no 'wrong' way to photograph cosplay (except perhaps as a fetish/freak hobby or with lots of the upskirt stuff that makes costume secondary).

Just a short update on the maid trend in Japan. After the maid cafes sprung up in Tokyo a bit more than a wek ago and got worldwide extensive press coverage, everybody would have thought it will be old stuff in a year or so. BUT…not so at all. Not only are the maid cafes popular as ever with waiting hours up to one hour.

Also many other places sprung up, from foot massage to drinking bars with the staff all dressed up. Shops offer maid costumes not only for party goods but also as a regular fashion. So you don`t need to be real lucky to find girls running around in full dress-up…

Maid in Akihabara (めいどinあきはばら Meido in Akihabara) is a 6 episode series that was produced in Japan on 2005 and released on Feb 24, 2006. Each episode ran about 15 minutes, and took place in Akihabara, Tokyo - the cyber city of Japan.

The story begins when a woman, named Saki, tries to find a job to hide from a bar gang, since she had worked at a bar before. She ends up getting a job at a Maid cafe called Meido no miyage (Maid's gift). She is the third maid to be joining the cafe. She is homeless and lives in a 24-hour internet cafe.

Obviously, as a maid in a maid cafe, she has to dress up as a maid, serving otaku customers looking for company and relaxation after, say, a long day of anime shopping or a night of waiting in line to score the perfect autograph to go on the perfect piece of anime/manga/game related merchandise. Needless to say, this world is completely foreign to Saki, but despite some initial discomfort, she tries to make the best of her situation.

Cosplay Restaurant

Cosplay restaurants (コスプレ系飲食店 Kosupure keiinshokuten) are theme restaurants and pubs that originated in Akihabara, Tokyo, Japan around the beginning of 21st century. They include maid cafés (メイドカフェ Meido kafue) and butler cafés (執事喫茶 shitsuji kissa), where the service staff dress as elegant maids, or as butlers.

Such restaurants and cafés have quickly become a staple of Japanese otaku culture. Compared with service at normal cafés, the service at cosplay cafés involves the creation of a rather different atmosphere. The staff treat the customers as masters and mistresses in a private home rather than merely as café customers.

Meido (メイド Japanese phonetic of maid) is also a jargon term amongst some otaku to refer to a type of stock female character in manga and anime. The characterization can have a cute or ecchi connotation depending on the writer. Most address their employers as goshujinsama(ご主人様) or ojousama（お嬢様） (especially the former. The latter is generally used for the employers' daughter).

The character differs from the traditional image of a typical housekeeper in being young, highly attractive, and usually wearing a maid outfit vaguely similar to a classic English or French design . In shōnen and seinen the outfit is almost universally fetishized: low-cut to show off the legs and chest, excessively colorful and/or frilly, and usually with white apron of variable length.

The types of characters who wear the costumes are often viewed dimly by fans as being an extreme take on the fetish combo of an 'ideal' housewife and an obedient servant, often with sexual connotations. In more wholesome terms, a fairly common device are meido harboring romantic feelings for their master or their wards (especially if they are younger).

Meido are often written in a comedic light, having employers with variably subtle embarrassing personality quirks which they put up with, having completely different personalities when "off the clock", or reprimanding their masters like children.

Many bishojo shows which contain scenes of characters in large households or doing spring cleaning inevitably produce art with the characters in these sorts of outfits.

The maids are often dressed in a combination of french maid-styled uniforms in attempt to look "moe". They also behave in a "cute" and "moe" manner. Sometimes, the maid outfit is augmented with cat or bunny ears. At maid cafes, most service staff members are female, and male jobs are typically limited to bar-backing and janitorial duties.

When a customer enters the café, the maids typically give an extraordinarily humble greeting, such as "Welcome home, Master" (お帰りなさいませ、ご主人様！ Okaerinasaimase, goshujinsama) in order to play the role of a house servant. In order to enhance the illusion that the customer is indeed the master, they often serve the customer in a very deferential fashion. For example, staff sometimes kneel to mix sugar or milk in teas or other drinks. The purpose of the maid cafés and their service is to make customers feel as though they are at home and to encourage them to relax. Although exemplary customer service is typical of Japan, maid cafés take special care to pamper patrons.

Recently, with the maid cafe scene booming, additional related services have become popular. These include ear cleaning (耳かき Mimikaki), a foot or hand massage, or a photography session (the customer typically rents time in a studio during which he can tell a maid which costume to wear and how to pose). Not only can you take pictures with the maids but also, certain cafe's have special performances. With the new game consoles, some cafes also have gaming time when you can ask your favourite maid to play with you but there are also traditional games such as "Jankenpon" (じゃんけんぽん）), which is rock paper scissors. Akihabara even features a "maid megane" (maid optician).

In imouto (younger sister) cafés, waitresses in uniform role play as the customer's fantasy younger sister. Similar to maid cafes, when a customer enters an imouto café, the "younger sisters" typically give an extraordinarily friendly greeting, such as "Welcome home, older brother / older sister!" (お帰り、お兄ちゃん／お姉ちゃん！ Okaeri, oniichan / oneechan), dropping the Japanese honorifics keigo from speech (extremely unusual for waitstaff in Japan).

While most cosplay restaurants and maid cafes cater mostly to men, there is also a type for women called the butler café (執事喫茶, shitsuji kissa). The butlers in these cafes are well-dressed male employees and may wear either a typical waiter's uniform or even a tuxedo or tails. There are also cross-dressing (male disguise style - 男装系, dansō-kei) butler cafes, where female staff dress up as butlers, instead of actual men.

International Cosplay

Cosplay in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom differs from Japanese cosplay culture in some ways. Cosplay concerning Star Trek, Star Wars, other science fiction worlds, Renaissance-era characters, and historical re-enactments (e.g. Civil War battles), especially at science fiction conventions, are far more popular in America than they are in Japan. Alternatively, some costumes that might be seen as in bad taste in America (such as Nazi uniforms from certain comics or games) may be seen at events in Japan.

For almost 50 years, costume fandom has had a consistent and widespread following with costumers in the west, from the first Worldcon onward, with the influx of anime costumes, the word cosplay is becoming a more and more commonly used term to describe costumes of specifically japanese media origins.

An issue with cosplaying anime and manga characters is that these characters generally do not have bodily proportions that can easily be mimicked by many typical cosplayers (e.g. incredibly long legs, huge muscles or giant breasts), and there is debate among fans about how important or not this element is when cosplaying.

In Mexico, cosplay is commonly seen inside conventions that can be video game, science fiction or anime themed. It is common that cosplayers will also organize their own reunions which can be themed or free for the sake of taking pictures together. Cosplay in Mexico is competitive in a healthy level, with well established representatives. This phenomenon also can be viewed in other Latin American countries, like Brazil, Argentina and Chile.

In Australia, the trend mirrors the American in that the subject costumes may be selected from sources other than manga or anime. Sources include American comics, computer games, science fiction/fantasy movies and TV shows, animation shorts or features, period drama, novels - any source that provides vivid and graphic inspiration of a character and their costume. Usually the term "cosplay" is not used to cover historical recreation as the focus is on representational accuracy, not historical accuracy. In general, Australian cosplay is most commonly seen in the larger population centres such as the capital cities and major regional centres, as these have the population base to support the diversity among fringe interests. The display of the costumes is not limited to conventions, although it is not unusual for dedicated cosplayers to travel extensively throughout Australia following the convention trail during the year. In addition to the social convening at conventions, many smaller social groupings exist, hosting their own local events.

In France, cosplay is a widespread activity in anime and manga conventions. Large conventions like Japan Expo can attract more than 500 cosplayers. While the majority of French cosplayers choose anime and manga for inspiration, many people like to dress like movie characters, famous singers or even TV show actors even if it's not directly related to the theme of the convention. Unlike the Japanese, French cosplayers use almost exclusively hand made costumes which are often used only once. Buying or reusing costumes is seen as unfair competition ( in some contests they can't compete). French cosplayers are mainly focused on the cosplay contest, which take place in nearly all manga, science fiction, fantasy or role playing game conventions. They are not really competitive, they're more of an occasion to show off the costume and appear as good as possible instead (e.g. scene, lighting, soundtrack, etc.). Acting and singing skills are highly valued in contests, and some groups reenact fighting or musical comedy scenes also. For example being able to do a cartwheel stunt in costume is part of the Japan expo tradition and one of the most valued figures in the contest.

In Belgium, cosplay plays an increasingly important role in the F.A.C.T.S. convention with hundreds of people dressed up in costume from different anime series.

Cosplay is rapidly entering the mainstream in the Philippines, where cosplay events are often held within an anime, manga, gaming, or sci-fi convention. More often than not, these conventions and events are sponsored, and debates have raged on whether or not judges' perspectives are influenced by the organizers of a cosplay event. Also Filipino cosplay rules overlook and allow professional fully commissioned costumes to participate in competitions.

Cosplay also has followers in other parts of Asia such as South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. As well as attending comic festivals and events, cosplayers there also frequent districts popular with teenagers. ***Source: Wikipedia

Cosplay Trends

A recent trend at Japanese cosplay events is an increase in the popularity of non-Japanese fantasy and science fiction movie characters, perhaps due to the international success of such films as The Matrix, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. Characters from the Harry Potter films have a particularly high number of female fans in Japan, with female cosplayers playing either male or female characters, Draco Malfoy being an extremely popular choice.

The act of cosplaying as characters of the opposite sex is called "crossplay", whereas the act of cosplaying as characters who dress as the opposite sex as the cosplayer is called "cross-dressing". Crossplaying and cross-dressing may be the same in some cases; however, they could be different. For example, a female cosplayer cosplaying as a male character who dresses as a normal male (such as Kira Yamato from Gundam SEED) would be cross-dressing and crossplaying; a male cosplayer cosplaying as a female character who dresses as a normal female (such as Lacus Clyne from Gundam SEED) would also be cross-dressing and crossplaying. However, a female cosplayer cosplaying as someone like Mana (male artist from the Visual Kei band Malice Mizer known for dressing in female clothes) would be crossplaying, but not cross-dressing (since the cosplayer is cosplaying someone of the opposite sex but is wearing clothes of her own sex); a male cosplayer also cosplaying as Mana would be cross-dressing, but not cross-playing (since the cosplayer is cosplaying someone of the same sex but is wearing clothes of the opposite sex).

A small niche group in the crossplaying field are dollers, a subset of kigurumi cosplayers; usually male, they wear bodysuits and masks to fully transform into female characters.

Another recent trend in cosplay is a blurring of the distinction between costumes based on characters from games and anime, and "original" costumes based upon a general theme or existing fashions. In particular, the Tokyo teen-fashion trend of Gothic Lolita has attracted some cosplayers who might not have the inclination (or possibly courage) to wear such distinctive clothes around town, but who would like to dress in such a manner on some occasions. Other popular trends include the "original Visual Kei cosplaying", "original punk cosplaying", "original Super Dollfie cosplaying", et cetera.

Memorial Day weekend: Picnics, barbecues and fun in the sun for some, but for manga and anime fans, it's convention time!

For West Coast otaku the place to be is FanimeCon, at the San Jose Convention Center. Besides 24-hour anime and Asian films, gaming and cosplay events, Fanimecon will also feature a maid cafe and a formal dance, the Black and White Ball on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, Animazement promises three days and nights of anime fun in Durham, North Carolina. Voice talent Kyoko Hikami (Di Gi Charat), Takeshi Kusao (Slam Dunk) join manga editor Trish Ledoux, plus a costume contest and two nights of J-Pop-fueled booty-shaking.
